Taking a tiny amount of psychedelic drugs each day, known as microdosing, is gaining popularity among a new breed of health seekers. They say the practice reduces anxiety, depression and stress while boosting creativity and energy. But the benefits aren’t from the hallucinogenic effects that come with a full acid trip — instead, they’re believed to be a result of the placebo effect.

While the exact boundaries of what constitutes a microdose remain undefined, most people identify it as successive self-administration within a narrow time window of doses that do not impair normal functioning and are predominantly sub-sensory. A typical dosage for a psychedelic like psilocybin is 1-2 per cent, which may be sufficient to achieve significant mood-enhancing and cognitive enhancement effects without producing a full-blown experience.

A survey published in January 2024 found that most people who report microdosing use the drugs LSD and psilocybin. But a smaller percentage of users reported microdosing with synthetic mescaline (including ayahuasca and San Pedro cactus) and lysergic acid amide or LSA, which is found in the morning glory plant.
